Backgrounds are an option that can be
added to your web pages for added interest. BUT........Beware !!
They can be very distracting (and annoying) to your viewer if not used carefully.
Very light and subtle backgrounds work best, since they tend not to obliterate any other images
or fonts. Dark backgrounds, or those with distinct patterns can be a
hindrance.
Also, backgrounds can be solid colors as well. Here are a few examples, including
good and bad choices.
